Sole Parents on the Right Track for Work

An intensive three-week programme designed to support Te Puke sole parents has reaped rewards for those wanting to return to the workforce.

From the trail course, modeled on Work and Income's successful Work Track programmes, six people successfully obtained jobs on graduation, and two are in further training.

Work Track provides job search skills and techniques, and covers CV preparation, goal setting, communication, attitude, handling rejection and overcoming barriers.

Work Track for Sole Parents was contracted by Work and Income to Waimarie Training & Development Ltd, trading as EmployNZ.

Within two weeks of the course starting each person had conquered their fear of cold-calling on potential employers, resulting in some people being offered jobs before they were advertised.

Tutor Trudi Haack says although the group was initially apprehensive, participants were very motivated to make positive changes in their lives.

"I realized straight away that each person was work ready.  They had the skills, but lacked confidence.  I just needed to help them identify what they had to offer to potential employers."

Te Puke Work and Income Case Manager David Jones co-ordinated the course on behalf of Work and Income, and was a regular Work Track visitor.  "They were an excellent group of people to work with.  Each of them is a success story," he says.
