...February 2010...

Yay!  It's February.  Auckland Anniversary Day. Valentines Day.  Great summer weather and we have the beaches and lakes back to ourselves.... Isn't life great?

Last month we talked about the need to future-proof ourselves by developing the skills and abilities that will be desirable in the industries that are going to continue to develop over the next decade or so.

The next thing is getting the opportunity to apply these wonderful talents of ours in the workplace.

Employers have had to deal with so many changes over the last few years that have meant they need to reduce costs but increase productivity.  Now, more than ever before, it is crucial for employers to be able to make good employment decisions as the impact of hiring someone who doesn't add value to the team or the business is just too costly; financially, time-wise, and in terms of team-satisfaction.

This is part of the reason for the huge growth in labour-hire and contracting type roles that we have seen over the last 10 - 15 years.  Which is great for when you are a recognised expert in your field, but what about for those of us who are just trying to get a start?

More and more of the employers we deal with regularly are choosing to recruit and develop new team-members through our pre-employment training programmes.

This involves you having the confidence in yourself to say (by your actions) that you are serious about your career choice, you believe you have, or can develop the skills and characteristics needed to be successful and add value to a company; and that you are prepared to back yourself by participating in professional development, (both on the job and theory) with them for the next 10 weeks.

This is giving the employer the chance to get to know you properly, to see that you are making a commitment to employment and are prepared to earn your opportunities.  What a strong message that sends to somebody wanting to invest in a new staff member!

Pre-employment training is also the ideal way to overcome holes in your Curriculum Vitae.  If you have been out of work for one reason or another then pre-employment training will give employers the chance to look past your Curriculum Vitae and see the person who is keen to join their team.

If you would like to talk with us about pre-employment training, feel free to contact us; by email (info@employnz.net.nz) or telephone Robyn on (07) 577-0177.

Good luck!

The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them.
